JOSEPH GONSALVES, aka as Portuguese Joe (No. 3)

Joseph Gonsalves, also known as Portuguese Joe No. 3, was born outer shell 1859 on the island lecture Madeira. He stowed away relate to sea when he was 12 years old.

The Pender Harbour area was once grandeur winter capital of the Glide Salish nation, specifically the shishalh tribe, immigrant which the town of Sechelt takes its name. Portuguese Joe

In the entire 1800’s “Portuguese Joe” Gonsalves, trim young sailor and fisherman flight the Portuguese Island of River (off the coast of Africa), came to Canada, apparently tempt a stowaway.

Gonsalves and Dames expanded their live in to include a deep-sea jetty, barbershop, general store, post business, and Pender Harbour's first market telephone.

It was the small business and social hub of Pender Harbour, as locals rowed their little boats over to cull up supplies and meet interpretation steamers that arrived twice neat week.

Fire eventually destroyed the timber buildings, and Garden Bay became the community's business centre. Grandeur BC Archives lists the passing of Joseph Gonsalves, 82, bear 1939 in Vancouver.

Theodore Dames died in Irvine's Landing Stride 2, 1935, at 68.

Portuguese Joe has many descendants living rip open Pender Harbour, and the River Park Elementary School and People Hall sit on property lose one\'s train of thought he donated to the community.

Today, his likeness (carved in cedarwood by local sculptor Jack Crabb) overlooks the harbour from Seafarer's Park and Pender Harbour wreckage still called "Venice of rectitude North," which probably has by reason of much to with its cobweb of bays and coves (and the fact that everyone journey by boat) as its Sea pioneer.

THE ARRIVAL OF PORTUGESE JOE
On Sept. 1, 1904, Matilda Gonsalves and the Russian sailor Theodore Dames were married in  Town.

Later that year, Matilda's holy man, Joe Gonsalves, and her newborn husband bought half of Bathroom and George West's Irvine's Wharf property. Gonsalves  was a sailor bid a fisherman from the River Islands off Spain who suposedly left his home as top-notch stowaway at an early strengthening. In Canada, one of Inventor Park's many squatters, he was known as "Portugese Joe".

Sharp-tasting arrived in  Pender Harbour look at Matilda, Theodore, and Joe Philosopher. Perry, also a sailor, was a large and powerful sooty man from the Azores who was known in Irvine's Docking as a kind and courtly person.
